2018  marked the first time AI outperformed humans in greenhouse growing operations in terms of yield and resource usage efficiency. In that year, I led the Microsoft Sonoma team participating in the first international autonomous greenhouse challenge, organized by Wageningen University and Research (WUR) in the Netherlands. Not only did we win the challenge, we also demonstrated that an Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithm can grow crops better than expert growers using conventional wisdom – with 6% improvement in yield and 17% improvement in profit. In 2021, continuing my passion to drive breakthroughs in sustainable food production, I led the Koala team comprised of Koidra (www.koidra.ai) and Cornell University researchers to win the first phase of the 3rd autonomous greenhouse challenge. Our team, Koala outperformed 46 teams from 24 countries in both the virtual net profit and overall ranking.
